09/11/08 Magnesium to enhance athletic performance Athletes in regular training often manifest intracellular magnesium deficiency in exercising muscles due to accelerated demand and use, inadequate dietary intake, and increased losses through urine and sweat during exercise. Magnesium deficient athletes may suffer muscle weakness, neuromuscular dysfunction, cramping and spasm or structural damage to myofilaments. Several researchers have discovered improved performance with magnesium supplementation. Female endurance athletes taking magnesium supplementation (15 mmol/day) found they could run at maximal intensity for longer, that submaximal O2 uptake decreased by 10 per cent, whereas maximal oxygen uptake (VO2) increased with a parallel change in work load. This data suggests an improvement in oxygen utilisation during magnesium supplementation, in female endurance athletes not exhibiting magnesium deficiency signs. In a double-blind randomized study, 23 triathletes competing in an event consisting of a 500-meter swim, a 20-km bicycle race, and a 5-km run were studied after 4-week supplementation with placebo or magnesium. Swimming, cycling, and running times decreased in the Mg group compared with the controls. Blood leukocyte count in the magnesium group did not increase as much as the control group indicating that magnesium reduces the inflammatory impact of exercise. This is also shown by the serum cortisol being lower in the Mg group before and after the test compared with the controls. Another study was done on magnesium depleted individuals, the outcome of the study was that magnesium deficiency caused muscle weakness, and that by restoring magnesium levels muscle power can be improved. Magnesium therapy in athletes has been shown to have an oxygen sparing effect, it was also able to increase the clearance of lactic acid, increase muscle strength and power output, improve performance and prevent muscle spasm and cramping. Many glucose sport drinks have been linked with reduced endurance performance due to their high concentration or osmolarity, which causes delayed gastric emptying of fluids, osmotic influx of water into the gut with resultant dehydration. Fortunately Endura Rehydration formula does not have this problem. A number of studies have looked at the effects of different types of liquid carbohydrate solutions and athletic performance. Glucose polymer-fructose at a concentration of between 6-10% has been proven to provide superior results since they minimally delay gastric emptying of fluids, and also provide the necessary calorie load to meet energy expenditure. The Endura Rehydration formula contains this form of glucose. A study by Kingress using cyclists, compared glucose polymer fructose diet (GPFD) with the high carbohydrate diet used by most athletes (for glycogen loading) and showed that the cyclists consuming both GPFD and the high carbohydrate diet had an amazing 126% improvement in performance over the group using only the high carbohydrate diet. |

27/10/08 Fluid and Electrolyte Balance For athletes to perform at their best they need to be well hydrated. Without sufficient water intake to sustain an adequate sweating rate during exercise, dehydration will occur. This results in an increase in body temperature and loss of performance. Once water loss exceeds 2-3% of body weight there is a drop in maximal work capacity, power output and performance. Thirst is a poor indicator for fluid replacement, usually lagging about 0.5-1 hour behind and accounting for only 50-60% of fluid lost during exercise. Fluid replacement will vary considerably under different circumstances, with amounts of 1-1.5 litres per hour usually providing enough hydration to maintain the temperature reducing effects of sweating.
