08/03/10 Tips for healthy weight loss

Responsible weight loss needn't be too difficult. It is important to first understand your individual energy requirements and to increase your energy output with an exercise schedule that includes both cardiovascular and resistance exercise. Just follow these simple tips for safe and effective weight loss that won't negatively impact your performance...

  1. Set realistic goals: Rapid or excessive weight loss may result in a loss of your precious lean muscle tissue, and subsequently, a poorer performance. Aim for a loss of 1/2-1 kilogram per week to maintain optimal conditioning for exercise.
  2. Don't skip meals: Skipping meals or leaving it too long between meals may be detrimental to your metabolism, and promotes fat storage while increasing muscle breakdown. You may also be more inclined to overeat later, which can hinder your weight loss efforts. Instead, try eating 4-6 times during the day to keep your metabolism running at full capacity.
  3. Beware of beverages: Sugar-filled beverages such as soft-drink, fruit drinks, sports drinks, iced teas, and frappes can all contribute heavily to your daily calorie intake, and you may find yourself consuming these in place of water as your drink of choice. This can quickly lead to dehydration and reduced athletic performance. Dehydration can also be mistaken for hunger (and hence a higher calorie intake), so ensure you drink at least 2 litres of water per day.

Endura Maintain: Using a high quality protein supplement after your workouts not only aids recovery, but helps to promote muscle growth and fat loss. Endura Maintain is an undenatured whey protein isolate powder which provides you with 16g of protein per serve in a low fat, low carbohydrate, great tasting beverage. Even better, studies suggest that increasing protein intake can improve satiety (making you feel fuller for longer) which subsequently reduces total calorie intake and therefore promotes weight loss.

Endura N-Acetyl Carnitine: Endura N-Acetyl Carnitine is a highly bioavailable and readily absorbed form of carnitine which plays an important role in both energy production and fat metabolism. Just 3/4 of a teaspoon in juice twice daily may help to improve your overall body composition by mobilising fatty acids for use as energy, and optimising your lean muscle gain via its protein-sparing effect. Endura N-Acetyl Carnitine may also improve your athletic performance by increasing cardiorespiratory endurance and by reducing plasma lactate accumulation during exercise.

02/12/09 Do you rest as hard as you train?

Training hard and resting hard are two sides of the same coin!

Recovery is an often neglected aspect of training; but without adequate recovery, you won’t be able to reach your optimal athletic potential.  You will all be aware that training hard and pushing your boundaries is vital to success: however, proper training requires proper rest. Overtraining and lack of adequate rest and recovery time leaves you at an increased risk of poor performance, fatigue and impaired immunity.

Endura Overtraining Formula is made up of high doses of five ginseng herbs: Siberian, Indian, Korean, Tienchi and American ginsengs. It has been specifically formulated to help your body deal with the high demands placed upon it during intense endurance exercise. The ginseng herbs may provide support to reduce the risk of overtraining syndrome. Furthermore, the ginsengs have also been shown to increase performance parameters; for example, sparing glycogen, increasing oxygen uptake, reducing blood pressure and improving stamina.

Many people may be aware of the benefits of some of the ginsengs and may also have used some over the years. What many people don’t realise though, is that ginseng is not a single herb, but a family of herbs, and each has their own specific actions. The inclusion of the five main ginsengs in the formula creates a greater effect than can be achived by using one on its own:

  • Tienchi ginseng may help to improve physical performance during endurance exercise.
  • Korean ginseng is traditionally used to help relieve fatigue and debility and to assist with capacity for work and concentration.
  • Siberian ginseng restores and strengthens the body’s immune response during times of stress.
  • Indian ginseng may assist cognitive functions, sleep patterns and physical capabilities in athletes.
  • American ginseng may stimulate the immune system and, therefore, help prevent against colds and flu.

Most of you are, no doubt, supporting your training sessions with supplements such as the Endura Rehydration . However, how many of you are supporting your rest and recovery with proven supplements designed to assist with recovery and overtraining? If you feel you are not getting adequate recovery, visit the SportRecovery shop and try supplementing with Endura Overtraining Formula.

30/08/09 Endura for your sport

Australia is a nation of sport enthusiasts, and this article highlights some specific applications of the Endura range for different kinds of sports. Common sports can be broadly categorised as either:

  1. Endurance sports, e.g. marathons, triathlons;
  2. High impact sports, e.g. football, basketball; or
  3. Low impact sports, e.g. walking, pilates, tenpin bowling.

These categories are based upon the different physical and nutritional demands that different types of sports place on the body. This allows specific Endura products to be recommended to suit the unique needs of each different sport.

Endurance Sports
Endurance sports typically involve disciplines such as running, cycling, swimming, kayaking and surf lifesaving. Other sports may also fall into this category; for example, a five set game of tennis, or test cricket (where a batsman can be at the crease for 8 hours or more).

Endurance sports involve sustained, prolonged aerobic exercise for hours, or even days. Endurance competition and training requires energy in the form of carbohydrates to be consistently delivered to the working muscles in order to support this sustained physical activity. During endurance exercise, carbohydrates can be depleted at a rate of 3-4 grams per minute. If this is sustained for two hours or more, a very large portion of the total body carbohydrate stores will be exhausted. If not checked, this will result in reduced performance and even exercise-induced muscle loss as the body starts breaking down muscle to meet energy demands.

Many athletes cannot consume enough food before, or during exercise to maintain blood sugar levels and body carbohydrate stores. This is where Endura Rehydration Formula and Endura Energy Gels are extremely useful.

Endura Rehydration provides the highest quality carbohydrates, electrolytes and specific key minerals, such as magnesium, potassium and sodium, which are in high demand by the body due to the unique nature of endurance sports. This is a scientifically advanced rehydration drink that is designed to replace glycogen and electrolytes in optimal ratios to aid in faster re-hydration. It includes patented magnesium, Meta Mag™, to help relieve muscular aches, help prevent cramping and improve stamina. Consuming Endura Rehydration before, during and after endurance exercise may help prevent blood glucose levels falling too low and also help replenish the body's glycogen stores and reduce exercise induced muscle breakdown.

Endura Energy Gels are a concentrated source of carbohydrates, providing a big boost of energy in a single compact serve. For particularly long and gruelling events, Endura Energy Gels can also be used in conjunction with Endura Rehydration. Each 35 g Endura Energy Gel contains 26 g of high impact carbohydrates to replenish your glycogen stores and give you the fuel to keep going.

High Impact Sports
This category of sports is by far the most common and popular. High impact sport involves intense frequent bursts of movement such as sprinting and/or jumping. High impact sports result in a fast sweat and a high heart rate. High impact sports involve both aerobic and anaerobic (without oxygen) energy systems to meet energy demands.

Common high impact sports include basketball, rugby, AFL, hockey, netball, tennis, soccer, cricket (batting and bowling), track and field athletics, motocross, BMX, mountain biking and volley ball; to name just a few. Studies also suggest the oxygen consumption and heart rate of professional race car drivers are similar to athletes in traditional sport settings.

For those who participate in high impact sports, Endura Optimizer, Endura Creatine Plus and Endura Max need to be your first supplements of choice.

Endura Optimizer is your first choice for optimising performance and recovery in all high impact sports. This formula contains hydrolysed lactalbumin – a specific whey protein extract that has been pre-digested to form a complex of di- and tri-peptides for rapid absorption and uptake by the muscles. It also includes high energy, easy-to-digest carbohydrates to enhance glycogen synthesis and supply a steady stream of energy to keep you performing at your peak.

Endura Creatine Plus provides the necessary nutrients to help increase and optimise the anaerobic energy production so vital to the short intense bursts of speed and power commonly seen in AFL or basketball, for example. Creatine is combined with glutamine (the most abundant protein in muscle) and HMB (an anticatabolic nutritional factor), which facilitates and optimises the body’s synthesis of muscle and reduces muscle break down. Creatine supplementation has been shown to enhance athletic performance and recovery. Think Endura Creatine Plus for instant explosive power on demand.

Magnesium has been shown to help increase physical performance in athletes. Magnesium is a vital nutrient that is involved in many important processes, including energy production. Endura Max delivers high doses of magnesium, taurine and B vitamins to ensure the body has the necessary building blocks to assist with optimal stamina. Just two serves of Endura Max per day will be sufficient, delivering 6 grams of taurine and 600 milligrams of elemental magnesium.

Low Impact Exercise
Low impact exercise generally involves movements where there is generally one foot on the ground at all times, and without significant elevation of heart rate. Low impact exercise can also include cycling and swimming. The advantage of low impact exercise is that it’s easy on the muscles and joints and ideal for the elderly or injured. Some other examples of low impact exercise include walking, tenpin bowling, pilates, water exercise, gentle forms of yoga, lawn bowls and bush walking. For low impact sports, consider Endura Maintain as part of your regular supplement regimen.

Endura Maintain is a high protein, low carbohydrate and low fat protein powder to maintain and build lean muscle mass and facilitate weight loss in people who participate in low impact exercise and sports that don’t require supplemental carbohydrates.

Individual Specific Sports Nutrition
Even though we have discussed sports-specific supplementation, it is important to remember that as your individual needs may vary, there are several other products in the Endura range that can be used to enhance performance for all types of sports. Always read the label and use only as directed.

22/07/09 Using Endura Sports Energy Gels

To ensure you can perform at your best, it's important to keep up glycogen stores while you exercise.  Keeping glycogen levels up is vital to maintain energy reserves, but we all know that digesting on the run is near impossible. That's why Endura Sports Gels contain a ready to absorb carbohydrate source to overcome this problem.

Endura Sports Energy Gels are a convenient energy source packed full of electrolytes, energy boosters like caffeine, and a blend of immediate impact and slow release carbohydrates to sustain energy levels. You can store them on you and just take with water as you need. They are an easy way of keeping glycogen and hydration levels up and are suitable for taking either during the whole event, or to get you through when you hit the wall.

If you don't drink water when you take gels, this can cause gastric upsets. Use them correctly and you won't have any problems.  For each gel consumed, you should look at drinking around 250-300mL of water to keep it isotonic for best absorption. However, drinking so much water in one hit can be too much to handle. It is best to slowly take the gel over 10–20 minutes and have small sips with every portion, to reach around that 250-300mL total.

For an easy, compact method of delivering nutrients during events, you can't go past Endura Sports Gels. When used correctly, they can provide you with that added boost to keep your performance on track. If you haven't tried them already, give Endura Sports Gels a go!

10/05/09 Stoke Your Metabolic Engines with Coenzyme Q10!

By supplementing with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), you can enhance stamina, reduce exercise-induced muscle injury and reduce the damaging effects of exercise-induced oxidative stress. Supplementing with CoQ10 can give you a much needed energy boost and support your athletic performance and recovery. CoQ10's unique benefits to you, as an endurance athlete, are primarily due to two of its proven attributes. Firstly, CoQ10 is necessary for the production of energy within each and every cell of your body. Secondly, CoQ10 functions as a powerful antioxidant.

CoQ10 for Widespread Energy Production
CoQ10 is also called ubiquinone, a name that signifies its ubiquitous (widespread) distribution in the human body. This vitamin-like compound is found in every cell of your body as part of the electron transport chain – the biochemical pathway responsible for producing the energy you need to live, breathe, train and compete. Since CoQ10 plays such a major role in energy production, supplementation may be especially beneficial for athlete.

CoQ10 Possesses Unique Antioxidant Properties
CoQ10 is an important fat-soluble antioxidant that is uniquely able to protect your cells' energy producing powerhouses, known as mitochondria, from exercise-induced free radical damage. The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 are of particular importance in endurance athletes, especially when you consider that endurance training and competition increases oxygen utilisation by 10 to 20 times over the resting state, thus greatly increasing the generation of harmful free radicals. This, justifiably, promotes concern about the greater levels of oxidative damage that endurance athletes may be exposed to. Fortunately, CoQ10 can help reduce this damage.

CoQ10 Put to the Test!
A recent scientific study put CoQ10 to the tough test of 240 minutes of cycling. Volunteers were given a daily dose of either CoQ10 100 mg, CoQ10 300 mg or placebo for a week leading up to the test. On the day of the test, they were asked to assess their fatigue levels before 240 minutes of cycling, after the 240 minutes, then 3 hours later. This test was repeated in double blind fashion on a monthly basis until all of the individuals had been included in each of the three supplement regimes. The results of this study showed that with physical exertion, CoQ10 reaches its maximum potential for increasing energy levels. Significant increases in energy were seen in all of the participants in the study and this was especially true for the higher dose of CoQ10. These results, and many others like them, indicate that supplementation with CoQ10 may be particularly beneficial for endurance athletes.

Supplement with Endura CoQ10 150
Endura CoQ10 150 is a naturally-sourced, naturally-fermented CoQ10 supplement containing a massive 150 mg dose of CoQ10 in each capsule. By making Endura CoQ10 150 part of your existing supplement regime you may significantly:
• Enhance cellular energy production.
• Reduce the free radical damage caused by exercise-induced oxidative stress.
• Reduce exercise-induced muscle breakdown.
• Boost athletic performance.
• Reduce recovery time.

Supplementing with Endura CoQ10 150 may significantly boost your athletic performance, reduce recovery time and, perhaps most importantly, give you that extra edge in realising your optimal athletic potential. Consider making Endura CoQ10 150 a regular part of your supplement regime today.

18/03/09 I'm not a bodybuilder, why should I supplement with protein?

This is a common question asked by endurance athletes. When you get down to it, endurance athletes are bodybuilders, moulding and training their bodies hard to achieve the desired athletic results. The truth is that endurance athletes and bodybuilders have similar protein requirements; however, their bodies use this protein differently. Bodybuilders need protein primarily to increase muscle tissue bulk, whereas endurance athletes need protein primarily to maintain and repair existing muscle tissue that is undergoing constant breakdown from day-to-day training.

High quality protein intake isn’t just for body builders! Endurance athletes need considerable amounts of protein, far above the normal adult RDA, because maintenance, repair and growth of lean muscle mass all depend on it. Low dietary protein can significantly lengthen recovery time, cause muscle weakness, and compromise immune function, all of which may lead to "overtraining syndrome". This hampers the beneficial effects of your training and potentially, can adversely impact your health

Endurance athletes tend to focus on carbohydrate intake and pay little attention to protein. As a result, protein deficiency often appears among endurance athletes, resulting in negative effects on both performance and health. The whey protein in Endura Optimizer is specifically hydrolysed and predigested to form a complex of di and tripeptides. Di and tripeptides are absorbed faster than non hydrolysed proteins and offer greater muscle recovery.

Endura Optimizer is a powdered sports supplement that contains the right balance of protein, carbohydrate and electrolytes all in one convenient formula to meet the exact needs of today's endurance athlete. It is a complete formula to assist with:

  1. Repair and maintenance of muscle tissue.
  2. Replenishment of depleted glycogen stores.
  3. Replacement of electrolytes.

09/11/08  Magnesium to enhance athletic performance

Athletes in regular training often manifest intracellular magnesium deficiency in exercising muscles due to accelerated demand and use, inadequate dietary intake, and increased losses through urine and sweat during exercise.

Magnesium is required for most ATP using enzymes, in fact it forms a complex called the Mg-ATP complex. This complex is required for muscular contraction, protein synthesis and energy production, hence is very important for athletic performance.

Magnesium deficient athletes may suffer muscle weakness, neuromuscular dysfunction, cramping and spasm or structural damage to myofilaments.

Several researchers have discovered improved performance with magnesium supplementation. Female endurance athletes taking magnesium supplementation (15 mmol/day) found they could run at maximal intensity for longer, that submaximal O2 uptake decreased by 10 per cent, whereas maximal oxygen uptake (VO2) increased with a parallel change in work load. This data suggests an improvement in oxygen utilisation during magnesium supplementation, in female endurance athletes not exhibiting magnesium deficiency signs.

In a double-blind randomized study, 23 triathletes competing in an event consisting of a 500-meter swim, a 20-km bicycle race, and a 5-km run were studied after 4-week supplementation with placebo or magnesium.  Swimming, cycling, and running times decreased in the Mg group compared with the controls.  Blood leukocyte count in the magnesium group did not increase as much as the control group indicating that magnesium reduces the inflammatory impact of exercise.  This is also shown by the serum cortisol being lower in the Mg group before and after the test compared with the controls.

Another study was done on magnesium depleted individuals, the outcome of the study was that magnesium deficiency caused muscle weakness, and that by restoring magnesium levels muscle power can be improved. Magnesium therapy in athletes has been shown to have an oxygen sparing effect, it was also able to increase the clearance of lactic acid, increase muscle strength and power output, improve performance and prevent muscle spasm and cramping.

Supplementing with Endura Rehydration formula should not only correct magnesium deficiencies, it will also provide the athlete with an easy to digest carbohydrate source, in doing so it will replace glycogen levels.

Many glucose sport drinks have been linked with reduced endurance performance due to their high concentration or osmolarity, which causes delayed gastric emptying of fluids, osmotic influx of water into the gut with resultant dehydration. Fortunately Endura Rehydration formula does not have this problem.

A number of studies have looked at the effects of different types of liquid carbohydrate solutions and athletic performance. Glucose polymer-fructose at a concentration of between 6-10% has been proven to provide superior results since they minimally delay gastric emptying of fluids, and also provide the necessary calorie load to meet energy expenditure. The Endura Rehydration formula contains this form of glucose.

A study by Kingress using cyclists, compared glucose polymer fructose diet (GPFD) with the high carbohydrate diet used by most athletes (for glycogen loading) and showed that the cyclists consuming both GPFD and the high carbohydrate diet had an amazing 126% improvement in performance over the group using only the high carbohydrate diet.

27/10/08 Fluid and Electrolyte Balance

For athletes to perform at their best they need to be well hydrated. Without sufficient water intake to sustain an adequate sweating rate during exercise, dehydration will occur.  This results in an increase in body temperature and loss of performance.  Once water loss exceeds 2-3% of body weight there is a drop in maximal work capacity, power output and performance.  Thirst is a poor indicator for fluid replacement, usually lagging about 0.5-1 hour behind and accounting for only 50-60% of fluid lost during exercise.  Fluid replacement will vary considerably under different circumstances, with amounts of 1-1.5 litres per hour usually providing enough hydration to maintain the temperature reducing effects of sweating.

Lack of electrolytes like sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium and chloride in the proper ratios will also contribute to intracellular muscle dehydration.  As dehydration occurs, the muscle cells cannot remove the metabolic acids, lactate and ammonia, which accumulate, this will cause muscle cell fatigue and damage.

Endura Rehydration
is a scientifically advanced rehydration drink that is designed to replace glycogen and the electrolytes magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and chloride in ratios similar to those found in muscle cells. Rehydration comes in four great flavours in the 800g pack- Lemon Lime, Raspberry, Orange and Pineapple. It is also available in Lemon Lime in the 2kg pack. Visit the Products page for more details.
